Before Your Appointment
To prepare for your visit:
Bring a list of your medications and supplements
Know approximately when your last possible exposure occurred (if seeking PEP)
Avoid starting or stopping any new meds until discussing with your provider
Be ready to review your recent sexual health and testing history — all discussed confidentially
During Your Visit
Consultation: We’ll review your health history, risk level, and goals.
Labs: Testing includes HIV screening, STI panel, kidney function, and other relevant labs to ensure medication safety.
Medication Setup: If appropriate, prescriptions for PrEP or PEP will be started same day.
Education: We’ll review correct use, side effects, and long-term prevention strategies.
After Your Visit
Follow-up testing for HIV and kidney function will be scheduled per CDC guidelines (usually every 3 months for PrEP users).
Adherence and routine check-ins help maintain optimal protection.
Continue using condoms and safer sex practices — PrEP/PEP protect against HIV, but not other STIs.
For PEP users, a follow-up HIV test is recommended at 4–6 weeks, 3 months, and 6 months post-exposure.
Frequently Asked Questions
Q: How do I know if PrEP is right for me?
A: PrEP is for anyone at ongoing risk for HIV — including individuals with new or multiple partners, inconsistent condom use, or partners living with HIV. It’s a powerful prevention tool for anyone who wants extra peace of mind.
Q: What if I had a recent exposure?
A: If you think you were exposed within the last 72 hours, don’t wait — contact us right away for PEP. Starting medication quickly is the most effective way to prevent infection.
Q: What labs are required before starting?
A: We’ll check your HIV status, kidney function, hepatitis screening, and baseline STI panel before or at the time of starting treatment.
Q: Are PrEP and PEP covered by insurance?
A: Yes. Most insurance plans cover both medications and related lab work. We also offer assistance programs and low-cost options if needed.
Q: What are the side effects?
A: Most people tolerate PrEP and PEP very well. Some may experience mild nausea, headache, or fatigue when first starting — these typically resolve within a few days.
Q: How long does PEP last?
A: PEP is taken for 28 days. It’s important to take every dose as prescribed and complete the full course for full protection.
Q: Do I need to keep taking PrEP forever?
A: Not necessarily. PrEP can be used during periods of higher risk and discontinued when no longer needed — always under provider guidance.
Q: Does PrEP replace condom use?
A: PrEP protects against HIV only. Condoms still protect against other STIs and are recommended as part of a comprehensive sexual wellness plan.
